bark in the park

Hadlock Field,  June 3rd, 2007

The First Bark in the Park, a PDF-sponsored event to benefit the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook, ME, was a howling success, despite the cold and windy conditions. 40 dogs and their people showed up at Hadlock Field in Portland to cheer on the Portland Sea Dogs as they took on the CT Defenders.

All dogs received a free, special issue Planet Dog Orbee baseball, and were directed to their own designated doggy area in the bleacher section of the park. The afternoon kicked off with an on-field parade led by Slugger the Sea Dog, showcasing the adoptable dogs from the ARL, and the many four-legged fans there for the game. Dogs were treated to Buddy Biscuits, a hot-dog bobbing bin, a wading pool, and a whole lot of cheers from the crowd. All the dogs were well-behaved and everyone had a wonderful time!

Our good friend and photographer Liz Donnelly took lots of wonderful photos of the event which she has posted on her website:

Take a look- if there are any shots you like, you can purchase prints directly from her.

STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE BARK IN THE PARK DATES!

2006 EVENTS

Bark Auction

In November, Bark: a not-so-silent auction was sponsored and hosted by PDF to benefit My Wonderful Dog (MWD).  The event raised $4,500 for the Portland-based non-profit organization \that trains service dogs to help people with disabilities live more independently.

More than 70 local businesses and craftspeople donated goods and services to make the event a huge success. Many thanks to all of our friends and supporters for joining us for the event, and

for their contributions to help dogs to help people.

The MWD program uses at-risk youth and

inmates at the Windham Correctional Facility to train the dogs, teaching them compassion, responsibility and trust.  To learn more about MWD, visit www.wonderfuldogs.org

Sit With Santa

Santa Claus also helped PDF raise funds this holiday season by participating in

the "Sit with Santa" event at the Planet Dog Company Store.  The annual event raises money for the Cycle of Life Fund

at the Children's Cancer Center of the New England Medical Center in Boston.  Kids and dogs are invited to have their photos taken with Santa and all

proceeds will help pay for toys, books, games, field trips and other therapeutic initiatives for children in the oncology

unit that are not in the day-to-day hospital budget. The wildly popular event attracted 50 dogs and raised over $500 for the Cycle of Life Fund.

Other notable events

Walks in the Parks to support our local shelters

Planet Dog Foundation supported the annual fundraising dog walks of our two local animal shelters with sponsorships, product donations and booths. PDF sponsored the Animal Welfare Society’s annual Strut Your Mutt, held September 10 at Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk. The weather was glorious, and they had the best turnout in the history of the event. Raising over $48,000, the event drew close to 300 four-legged participants and a crowd of between 500-600 walkers.   PDF is proud of our long standing support of AWS and thrilled to sponsor this hugely successful event.

September 24, PDF helped celebrate the 9th annual Paws in Park fundraiser to benefit the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook. PDF provided a cash sponsorship, as well as Orbees and treats for every walker’s goody bag. We also had a booth selling a selection of PDOG products and sharing information about adoption and our philanthropic programs, with all proceeds going to support canine service initiatives. With food, games, dog contests and lots of vendors, Paws in the Park was fun way to bring Portland’s dog community together for a great cause. Together, we helped raise more than $39,000 for ARL and all the animals they serve every year.

No Pet Left Behind

On Sunday, June 11th, pet lovers throughout the U.S responded to a national call to raise funds and awareness in support of the Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act.  To support the effort, Planet Dog Foundation donated $500 to the Humane Society Legislative Fund to help ensure the passage of the PETS Act.

The PETS Act, which is the cornerstone for the "No Pet Left Behind" Campaign, is being lead by the Humane Society of the United States.  This long-overdue Act requires local and state disaster plans to include provisions to help household pets and service animals affected by major disasters or emergencies. President Bush signed this landmark legislation into law in October.

Take Your Dog to Work Day

Planet Dog Foundation joined businesses across the country by participating in Take Your Dog To Work Day (TYDTW) hosted by Pet Sitters International, an educational organization for professional pet sitters.   Take Your Dog To Work Day is a national holiday that celebrates dog companionship, the health benefits of pet ownership, raises awareness about homeless pets and encourages non-pet owners to consider adoption from local shelters.

Every day is Take Your Dog to Work Day at Planet Dog, where dogs easily outnumber employees.  Planet Dog encourages other businesses to follow their lead and allow employees to bring their well-behaved and groomed dogs to work instead of leaving them at home or dropping them off at doggie day care.

In support of this national event, Planet Dog Foundation hosted a lunchtime canine celebration at Tommy’s Park in Portland with dogs available for adoption from the Animal Welfare Society, the Animal Refuge League and Tall Tails Beagle Rescue. Selected Planet Dog products were available for sale, and all proceeds went to support the philanthropic efforts of the Foundation. In addition, there were treats, games, give-aways and lots of free wags! PDF then joined scores of local doggie businesses in Congress Square for the Take Your Dog to Work Downtown Party, with vendors, face painting, agility demos, service and police dog displays, and lots of doggie crafts by local artists.
