At
Planet Dog, our dogs are our best friends. We love to romp, fetch
and play with them. We love to outfit, pamper and groom them. They
are close to our hearts and help make us whole. In addition to
being our best buddies, our dogs give back to us in countless
ways. They give us wet kisses when we walk through the door,
they listen when we need to talk and comfort us when we aren’t
feeling well. We all know dogs have a natural capacity to
make us feel better, cared for and unconditionally loved. But when
working for people in need, they are capable of so much more. They
visit sick children and the elderly in hospitals and uncover landmines
in war zones. They alert a deaf person when someone is at the
door and locate hikers lost in the mountains. They find help when
their person has a seizure and assist police in dangerous patrols.
Therapy
dogs. Service dogs. Search & rescue dogs. Bomb
sniffing dogs. Police dogs. Planet Dog celebrates all “working” dogs
that are enhancing and saving human lives.

The Evolution of Planet
Dog’s Philanthropy.
From the first conversation about building a company
to be the planet’s source for all things dog, Planet Dog’s
founders knew they wanted to build a socially responsible company
that both celebrates and enhances the lives of dogs and their people,
but one that also improves the world around them by giving back.
In 2000, the company founded Planet Dog Philanthropy,
a 501(c)(3) grant-making organization with an ambitious agenda: to
fund creative and effective programs working for the environment,
animal welfare, and education. Planet Dog Philanthropy was conceived
to give back and help our earth, our animals and our children through
inventive and progressive grantmaking. The overarching goal was to
generate knowledge, develop new solutions to problems and promote
activities that strengthen our communities.
Since 2000, Planet Dog Philanthropy has awarded 21
grants totaling more than $75,000 to better the world around us.
Because of limited resources, grants were targeted only within New
England. Awards across these three focus areas enabled small, innovative
programs to move to the next level and grow. In 2005, the PDP Board
of Directors engaged in a facilitated strategic planning process
to look back over the previous 5 years and assess where the organization
wanted to move over the next 5 years.
The Board of Directors emerged from this process with
renewed energy and clearer sense of mission and purpose. The goals
from the earliest days of the charitable giving program were to eventually
expand the grant program nationwide, and to make the maximum impact
with the limited resources available from a small, but growing company.
In order to do this, the Board decided to re-focus the grantmaking
priorities in order to expand the program to the national level.
As a company that celebrates all things dog, and that
is supported by customers who cherish their pets, it made perfect
sense to focus our philanthropy to support the many ways in which
our dogs enrich our lives and give back so much to people in need.
We are extremely proud of Planet Dog's first 5 years of philanthropy,
and the groundwork we have laid in innovative corporate giving, active
learning, and careful reflection. We are extremely excited to build
upon this foundation of giving with the Planet Dog Foundation.
